‘For the Church Phoenix’ seeks to encourage, edify

PHOENIX (BP) -- Midwestern Seminary hosted "For the Church Phoenix," its third in an annual series of micro-conferences, at the Phoenix Convention Center during the 2017 Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting. The event featured leaders from across the SBC presenting on featured topics in a seven-minute TED Talk-like format. "Our aim at For the Church Phoenix was to give attendees the very best encouragement and instruction that Midwestern Seminary could possibly provide through these brief presentations," Midwestern president Jason Allen said during the June 13 event. "Existing for the church is what this school stands for, and our desire is that everyone has departed here more edified to carry out their ministries."

Spurgeon collection launched online

Embrace Gospel’s ‘foolishness,’ MBTS grads exhorted

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP) -- Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary's academic year concluded in celebratory fashion May 12 as graduates, families and friends gathered for the 61st commencement, launching theologically-trained Gospel ministers into service. The seminary's largest-ever graduating class of 135 students received 31 undergraduate, 82 graduate and 19 doctoral degrees and three diplomas from Midwestern Women's Institute.

‘Apocryphal’ gospels examined by Gathercole at MBTS

British scholar Simon Gathercole led a two-lecture series at Midwestern Seminary entitled, "What the 10 Gospels say about Jesus' Death and Resurrection," and "What the 10 Gospels say about Jesus, the Jewish Messiah."

TRUSTEES: MBTS breaks ground for student center

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP) -- Groundbreaking for a 40,000-square-foot student center and a report of record enrollment were key highlights of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary's trustee meeting, April 3-4 at the Kansas City, Mo., campus. Trustees, the seminary community, MBTS supporters and leaders from around the Southern Baptist Convention ceremonially broke ground April 4 at the site of the future Mathena Student Center.

B&H Academic launches ‘Lost Sermons’ of Spurgeon

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP) -- B&H Academic has launched the first of a 12-volume series of previously unpublished sermons by the famed British preacher Charles H. Spurgeon. "The Lost Sermons of C.H. Spurgeon" series is being researched and edited by Christian T. George, assistant professor of historical theology and curator of Spurgeon Library at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, which hosted a luncheon for the launch at its Kansas City, Mo., campus.

MBTS honors longtime professor during graduation

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP) -- As Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary launched 93 of the next generation of pastors, ministers and missionaries into Kingdom service, a longtime professor was also honored during the seminary's 60th commencement exercises on Dec. 9. Prior to his graduation address, President Jason Allen honored Alan Tomlinson, who has served as Midwestern Seminary's professor of New Testament and Greek since 1995, with a festschrift in the latest edition of the Midwestern Journal of Theology.

Alistair Begg delivers Spurgeon Lectures at MBTS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP) -- Pastors must follow Charles H. Spurgeon's example by living a life of conviction, humility, integrity and an intense "longing of his heart to see men and women come to Christ," noted Alistair Begg during the fourth annual Spurgeon Lectures on Biblical Preaching at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Begg, a popular evangelical pastor of Cleveland-area Parkside Church, delivered his lectures at the seminary's Kansas City, Mo., campus on Oct. 18-19. Begg was also inducted by MBTS President Jason Allen as the school's fourth Spurgeon Fellow. The lectures were held about a year after the dedication of the seminary's Spurgeon Library and Jenkins Hall.

MBTS trustees affirm enrollment gain, student center

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP) -- Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary's trustees celebrated the announcement of record enrollment growth and voted to move forward with plans for a student center during their fall meeting, Oct. 17-18 at the Kansas City, Mo., campus. During his president's report, Jason Allen announced that the seminary's enrollment has doubled in size in less than five years.

‘Portraits of a Pastor’ fill MBTS conference

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP) -- With a focus on commending the honor of the pastoral office and fueling worship within the pastoral heart, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary hosted the third For the Church Conference at its Kansas City campus. More than 1,000 pastors, students and ministry leaders from across the Midwest and beyond heard keynote speakers Jason Allen, Danny Akin, Owen Strachan, Ronnie Floyd and Jared Wilson preach messages revolving around the conference theme "Portraits of a Pastor."
