NEW ORLEANS (BP)–The annual Southern Baptist Chaplain’s Convocation, sponsored by the North American Mission Board will focus this year on the 60th anniversary of the Southern Baptist Chaplain’s Commission.
The meeting will be held June 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of New Orleans, 4301 St. Charles Avenue. All chaplains and state convention staff who work with chaplains — active and retired — are invited to attend with their spouses. Lunch will be served at noon.
Speakers for the event will focus on three 20-year segments of the commission’s history. James Spivey, professor of church history at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas, will cover the period from 1941-61, and Gerald Marsh, a former Southwestern professor and former Home Mission Board (HMB) chaplaincy staff member, will address the period from 1961-81.
The most recent 20 years will be addressed by Huey Perry, former HMB director of chaplaincy, who will appear via a videotaped presentation, and Bob Vickers, current director of chaplaincy evangelism for NAMB. The current NAMB chaplaincy evangelism staff also will look ahead to the next 20 years of Southern Baptist chaplaincy.
