SUWANEE, Ga. – W. Thomas Hammond, Jr., executive director of the Georgia Baptist Mission Board, and the executive committee of the Georgia Baptist Mission Board announced a series of changes to the GBMB staff.
In a regularly scheduled meeting Dec. 3, the committee affirmed these changes and announced them Dec. 10 at a meeting of the full executive committee. All agreed these updates enhance the effort of the GBMB to equip churches and leaders throughout the state and continue to focus on expanding the Gospel reach to the 7 million lost people in Georgia.
Effective Jan. 1, 2025, Andy Childs will assume the role of assistant executive director of the Georgia Baptist Mission Board. This role was made vacant when Mark Marshall transitioned to lead the church strengthening ministry focus of the GBMB in March.
Childs is well known as a current catalyst for pastor wellness in the state’s northeast region. Prior to joining the GBMB in March 2021, he served as senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Toccoa for 17 years. Childs has a long history of serving in Georgia Baptist churches and on multiple committees in Georgia Baptist and Southern Baptist life. He served as executive committee chairman for Georgia Baptists from 2018-2019.
“I am grateful that the Lord placed Andy Childs here a few years ago and that it has become clear he is the man for this role,” Hammond said. “Andy is respected throughout the state and serves with energy and compassion. I look forward to working with him more closely and sharing in the work of reaching Georgia for many years to come.”
Childs’ role will provide support to the executive director in addition to ministries reporting to him including Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief.
Ty Salter will step into the role of chief financial officer for the Georgia Baptist Mission Board. Salter will assume a portion of the responsibilities currently held by David Melber, who announced in October that he would be leaving to lead the Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina effective Jan. 1.
“As David heads to North Carolina, it will take multiple people to fill the void he leaves,” Hammond said. “Ty is a trusted friend, a servant who loves the Lord and people, and brings the fiscal experience we need right now. I’m thankful Ty was willing to return home and serve in this significant role.”
Salter will oversee financial, human resources, and real estate responsibilities related to the GBMB. He most recently served as the chief credit and capital officer for the Baptist Foundation of California. His extensive resume includes roles in Southern Baptist and state ministries including Ohio.
Other staff updates include:
- Leadership of Mission Georgia returns to Beth Ann Williams. Williams currently oversees Georgia Baptist Women and led Mission Georgia until earlier this year when it was transitioned to Melber’s area.
- Greg Teffertiller, who currently leads marketing and events, adds the managing editor role for The Christian Index, the state’s online news entity. His role is responsible for the strategy and budgetary aspects of the Index. He will also oversee the information technology area of the GBMB.
- Henry Durand, who currently serves on the Index staff, becomes news editor overseeing the day-to-day content publishing and distribution responsibilities.
Hammond concluded, “I truly love our GBMB team. God has assembled a group of talented, hard-working individuals who serve together with a spirit of humility. I am looking forward to 2025. I believe we will see a tremendous harvest of souls as we all work to glorifying our Lord.”
