FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) – The day after a settlement was announced in a dispute between Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and its former president Adam Greenway, Greenway released a statement taking issue with the seminary’s “characterizations of the motivations” behind his overture toward a settlement.
On Monday (Sept. 9), SWBTS and Greenway issued a joint statement announcing the two parties had agreed to settle their dispute, which had been ongoing since Greenway left the seminary nearly two years ago and culminated in his filing a defamation lawsuit against the seminary in March of this year.
Following the release of the joint statement, the seminary released its own statement on Monday, which said in part, “We believe the manner of this resolution not only vindicates the seminary, it further demonstrates the allegations made in the lawsuit were without merit.”
Greenway did not respond to the seminary’s follow-up statement right away but released a public response Tuesday (Sept. 10).
“Late last week, I directed my legal counsel to extend an olive branch to legal counsel for Southwestern Seminary, motivated by my steadfast desire to achieve an amicable resolution to our ongoing dispute, whereby the Seminary would fulfill its original commitment to take responsibility for issuing a joint statement acknowledging our separation, with malice toward none and charity toward all,” Greenway wrote. “While I am grateful that such a statement has now been issued, I disagree strongly with the Seminary’s characterizations of the motivations behind or the meaning of the settlement. Scripture counsels us that we are to ‘if possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone’ (Romans 12:18 CSB). I am content to let the joint statement speak for itself. I look forward to putting this chapter of my life behind me and focusing on the hope and the future that our Lord had for me and my family.”
Greenway served as president of SWBTS from 2019-2022.
