George Liele Church Planting, Evangelism, Missions Sunday materials available
By IMB Staff
Celebrate African American and Black pioneers whose lives inspire the next generation to continue the work of solving the world’s greatest problem – lostness. The International Mission Board invites all Southern Baptists to recognize Feb. 2 as George Liele Church Planting, Evangelism and Missions Sunday.
This special Sunday recognizes the life and work of these pioneers, and so many more:
- George Liele, who many acknowledge as the first overseas missionary from the United States in 1782.
- Lott Carey, who organized African American missions in the 1800s.
- M. Lockridge, who was a faithful preacher of the Gospel in the 20th century.
- Sid Smith, who was one of the first African American Southern Baptist denominational leaders in the modern era.
- Fred Luter, who was elected as the first African American president of the Southern Baptist Convention.
We invite you to learn more about the namesake of George Liele Church Planting, Evangelism and Missions Sunday by taking a video journey with Quintell Hill, IMB’s African American church mobilization strategist. In this short documentary, Hill goes to First African Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia, to visit the church who sent Liele to the mission field.

ERLC’s Psalm 139 Project to dedicate ultrasound machine at Tennessee pro-life center
By ERLC Staff
The Psalm 139 Project, a pro-life ministry of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, has donated an ultrasound machine to Beating Hearts Help Center in McKenzie, Tenn., in partnership with the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board.
A dedication ceremony will be held Jan. 15 at Beating Hearts Help Center located at 21203 TN-22 McKenzie, TN 38201. Rachel Wiles, director of The Psalm 139 Project, will attend the dedication ceremony.
“We are thrilled to partner with our friends at the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board to place an ultrasound machine in McKenzie,” said Wiles. “We know that when a woman sees an image of her baby, everything can change in an instant, and we are proud to partner in this life-saving work.”
Kathy Ham, the center director of Beating Hearts Help Center, commented on the ultrasound placement.
“Beating Hearts Help Center opened its doors almost nine years ago. The vision was and is to live in a community where every life, born and unborn, is loved and cherished no matter what. The Psalm 139 Project made it possible for us to secure a new machine so that life can continue to speak for itself. God created each one of our babies and we are so thrilled and excited to let their voices be heard.”
One hundred percent of financial contributions designated to the Psalm 139 Project go toward purchasing ultrasound machines and providing training for workers. No ERLC Cooperative Program resources are used for these machines. Tax-deductible gifts may be made online to The Psalm 139 Project, or via check to ERLC, 901 Commerce Street, Nashville, Tenn., 37203. Learn more at psalm 139 project.org.
